Projectionists (The Method)

Political Regimes have a tendency to dictate the aesthetics of their times. Socialist Realism is one example and so is the totalitarian regime of Stalin, who forced certain innovative ideas underground for years. During their residency Hacklander \ Hatam, together with Swedish programmer Fredrik Olofsson, are entering into the dust of the unofficial archives of that time through the guidance of their guests Andrey Smirnov and Lubov Pchelkina. Through their archival efforts some of these histories were saved from total obliteration by collecting this unwanted & censored culture of the Russian early 20 th-century avant-garde – including scientific & artistic inventions in film, electronic music, musical instruments & conceptual trans-disciplinary endeavors. Smirnov and Pchelkina will introduce a lecture on their archival work. The sonic duo Hacklander \ Hatam togeter with programmer Fredrik Olofsson, will use these archives as creative fodder in their concert-lecture »Projectionists (The Method)«.
Following a research / immersion period, the group will exhibit compositional sketches & technical explanations of the systems & content to be presented in the concert-lecture, including postulations of new systems (musical, organization, or oriented towards a future society). A sign will accompany the display explaining that two hours of study prior to the performance are required; a step-ladder will be provided for exhibition visitors.

The concert-lecture performance will contain live technical presentations which flow uninterruptedly into a new live audio-visual piece performed on drums, percussion, laptop, speakers and visual components.

Hacklander \ Hatam is the hard-hittin’ drum + electronic music duo of Colin Hacklander & Farahnaz Hatam. Interested in transparency, liberation, rhythmic stability & its absence, the depth of radical material heteronomy in contemporary capitalism & the nature of our mobilised conditioning; sound as sculptural material; sound as a medium in which ideas are communicated; digital sound synthesis with SuperCollider; drums, percussion & gongs.

Fredrik Olofsson studied composition at the Royal Music Academy in Stockholm, Sweden. Ever since his graduation 14 years ago, he has worked as a software and electronics developer for art installations, and as a performer of live video and electronic music. Currently, alongside collaborations, commissions, residencies, workshops and live performances he is doing contract work for the project rhyme.no in Oslo, Norway and teaches computational art at Universität der Künste in Berlin.
